5 Castles For Your Sintra Things To Do List
Parking Recommendations: Read my blog post on parking in Sintra.
Sintra Restaurant Recommendations:Cafe Saudade near train station for sandwiches and snacks in beautiful space, Incomun for fantastic food (white table cloth but my kids loved it ), and Alba Gelato for homemade gelato! See below for a whole section on pastries!

1) Pena Palace - Top Thing To Do in Sintra, Portugal
Even though I mentioned that there's more to do than the Insta-famous Pena Palace, I do need to start with it! This place is like something straight out of a fairytale, with its vibrant colors and mix of architectural styles that make it truly unique. It can be a little confusing to get to the Castle so I wrote a whole blog post about parking in Sintra and ways to get from the historic center up to the mountain.
There are 3 main parts of the castle:
- The Gardens (Small fee, discussed below under Parque de Pena)
- The Exterior (Small fee included in the Gardens fee. If you don't have a lot of time, you can just see the exterior of the castle and take great pictures under the arches. Also you get to avoid the crowds!)
- The Interior (Combo ticket.) I highly recommend doing this if you have the time. There are over 40 rooms inside the castle with grand halls and intricate rooms. Plus, the views from up there are just breathtaking—you can see the lush Sintra hills rolling out to the ocean. It's not just a visit; it's an experience that captures the essence of Portugal's rich heritage and natural beauty. Trust me, you don't want to miss it!
Insider Tip for Sintra Castle:
1) Whether you decide to do the Exterior or Interior, make sure you don't miss the Castle Walk! It is included in both and my favorite part that so many tourists miss. Here's a reel I did with video. You enter from the Yellow Arches area in a small doorway to the right if facing the arches.
2) Make sure you read about the Official Timed Entrance rules for Pena Palace. And read my tick-tock timing recommendation for Sintra here.
2) The Moorish Castle / Castelo dos Mouros

If you asked a kid to draw a castle, it would probably look like The Moorish Castle! We had friends visit with 4 elementary age kids and this was their favorite of the trip! Note, you cannot go inside the castle as it is actually the ruins and walls dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries. The fun of visiting is climbing around the castle walls and seeing the incredible views and history under your feet!
Insider Tip for Visiting The Moorish Castle:
1) There is a ticket booth near the road but if there is a line, you can do the beautiful walk to the walls of the castle (about 5 - 10 minutes) and there is another electronic ticket booth there. Or you can purchase online if you have website reception!
2) Make sure you check out the official website for the Points of Interest because it will show you some cool things that you might miss when you visit.
3) Quinta da Regaleira - One of My Personal Fav Things To Do In Sintra

Quinta da Regaleira is a truly magical place in Sintra that feels like stepping into a dream. It was built in the early 20th century by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, this estate is an architectural masterpiece filled with mysterious symbols and hidden meanings. The Gothic-style mansion is impressive, but the real adventure lies in its gardens, which are filled with secret tunnels, enchanting grottos, and the famous Initiation Well, a spiraling "inverted tower." My family really loves exploring the gardens!
Insider Tip:
Definitely save time and room for dessert at the Garden Cafe! My kids love the crepes and ice creams and my husband and I love the espresso and lattes!
Palácio de Monserrate - Our Favorite Garden in Sintra

Monserrate Palace is almost a hidden gem in Sintra as many tourists don't get a chance to see it! We are lucky to have an annual pass so this is one of our family's favorites to return to because it is not touristy at all and it is the only one with a parking lot! The Palace is an easy parking lot that showcases a blend of Gothic, Moorish, and Indian architectural styles. It was built in the mid-19th century as a summer residence for Sir Francis Cook, a wealthy English merchant, this palace stands out with its design and richly decorated interiors. The surrounding gardens are our family's favorite with plants from around the world, cascading waterfalls, and romantic ruins that add to the palace's charm. Here's a video of our trip to Monserrate!
Insider Tip:
Again, the cafe is great here! It is located in an old coach house and has fresh pastries. Don's miss the Valley of the Ferns.
5) National Palace of Sintra

If you want to see where the Kings and Castles of Portugal actually lived, check out the National Palace of Sintra. Also known as Palácio da Vila, is a historic treasure nestled in the heart of Sintra. This palace is renowned for its distinctive twin chimneys and a blend of Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Mudéjar architectural styles, reflecting centuries of royal history. Dating back to the early 15th century, it served as a residence for Portuguese royalty and has been impeccably preserved. Inside, you'll find stunning azulejo tiles, intricate woodwork, and grand rooms like the Swan Room and the Magpie Room, each with its own unique story.
5 Best Walks and Hikes - Things To Do in Sintra

1) Parque of Pena - Gardens of Pena
So many people miss out The Park of Pena but it really is a can't miss! I highly recommend getting an early Pena Palace entry, then walking down through the Gardens and then seeing Moorish Castle. That will take you the whole day!
The gardens were designed in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II with over 200 hectares and features a diverse array of plants from around the world, picturesque ponds, winding paths, and hidden grottoes. As you explore, you'll encounter breathtaking viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the Sintra Mountains and beyond.
Insider Tip:
My kids love exploring the little paths and grottos in the gardens. We bring these walkie talkies so they can explore and talk to us! Also, there is a small vending machine in the guard building at the exit for a snack on your exit!
2) Cabo da Roca - Lighthouse on the Westernmost Edge of Europe!

Cabo da Roca, located on the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is a breathtaking spot that offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Our realtor friend brought us here when we were looking for a home and it was a magical time to enjoy the views. This dramatic cliffside location is marked by a lighthouse and a stone monument, making it a perfect place for some memorable photos. What makes Cabo da Roca truly special is its raw natural beauty and the sense of standing at the edge of the continent, where land meets the vast expanse of the sea.
Parking Link: Large parking lot here.
Restaurant Recommendation: I write more below but Moinho Dom Quixote is a must visit.
Insider Tip for Cabo da Roca: Our realtor took us here at sunset which was a truly magical experience. The golden hour light makes the cliffs and ocean even more spectacular and there was even live music that made it special for my kids and I!
3) Sanctuary of Peninha - One of the Hidden Gems of Things To Do in Sintra
This is where my family takes our out of town guests! The Sanctuary of Peninha is a hidden gem in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park that offers an enchanting mix of history, spirituality, and breathtaking views. Perched atop a rocky hill, this sanctuary includes a chapel dating back to the 17th century and a more modern house built in the early 20th century. You cannot go inside but there are great places for kids to explore and huge boulders to (carefully!) climb around.
Parking Lot Link: It only takes about 5 - 10 minutes to walk up the hill from the parking lot.
Insider Tip:
After exploring the sanctuary, take some time to hike the nearby trails. They’re less traveled and offer some of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the park, perfect for a quiet picnic or some reflective time in nature. Here is a great blog post with more information including tons of photos.
4) Azenhas do Mar - Seaside Village with Ocean Pool!

Azenhas do Mar is a picturesque seaside village that looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. We visited on a cloudy day but it was still so beautiful! Nestled on a cliffside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this charming village is known for its whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs, cascading down to a stunning "natural" ocean swimming pool. We will be back for summer!
Parking: We found a small parking lot near this cafe on the water walk with a great viewpoint.
Restaurant Recommendation: Adega das Azenhashad great Portuguese food in a cozy adega = wine cellar.
An insider tip:
If you can, try to visit during the off-season for a more peaceful and authentic experience without the summer crowds.
5) Hike to Cruz Alta - Above the Sintra Castles!
This is the only one on this list that I haven't done personally but I have friends who say this is a great hike! The hike to Cruz Alta takes you above the stunning castles of Sintra, offering panoramic views that are simply unforgettable as it's the highest point in the area.
Distance: 2.4 km out and back. Trail details here.
Cost: You do need to pay for a garden ticket which you can do online. 10 euros for adults and 9 euros for kids.
An insider tip: Bring a picnic to enjoy at the summit and make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the trail can be quite steep and rocky in parts. This hike is a perfect way to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of Sintra from a unique vantage point.

4 Of Our Favorite Restaurants and Bakeries in Sintra
1) Moinho Dom Quixote - Our Favorite Restaurant in Sintra Portugal

Our favorite restaurant in Portugal currently is just 5 minute drive from Cabo da Roca Lighthouse! It's an old windmill with stunning views and a playground! Minho Dom Quixote is a must visit.
2 - 3) Finding the Best Travesseiro in Sintra - Foodie Things To Do

Ever sine we had the famous travesseiro in Sintra, my husband and I have been on a hunt for the best one! We have been to 5 different bakeries and have our rankings below. This delicious pastry's name means "pillow" in Portuguese and was created in the early 20th century by the Casa Piriquita bakery and was a favorite of the King at the National Palace just down the street. The recipe, passed down through generations, consists of a flaky puff pastry filled with a luscious almond and egg cream.
Travesseiro Bakeries:
- Dona Estefânia - Fábrica de Queijadas e Travesseiros de Sintra - This is our current favorite. It is a couple blocks from the historic center but worth it!
- Casa Piriquita - This is the original and very delicious but very sweet. There is usually a line but it moves fast or you can squeeze by and request table service!
4) Caldo Verde and Tascantiga - Portuguese Tapas Great Views
Tascantiga lives up to the YouTube hype (our fav travel YouTubers!) a charming eatery in Sintra that captures the essence of traditional Portuguese cuisine with a modern twist. Known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly service, Tascantiga is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists seeking an authentic dining experience. One of the standout dishes here is their caldo verde soup, a delicious and hearty Portuguese classic. Made with finely shredded collard greens, tender potatoes, garlic, and slices of chouriço (Portuguese sausage), this soup is both comforting and flavorful.
An insider tip: It can get very busy and no reservations that I know of so go 15 minutes before it opens at 12:15 PM. Closed Sundays.

Sintra Hotel Recommendations for Families

I chose the following hotels because of the following criteria:
- Space for a family (lots of hotels in Europe only allow 2 people per room)
- Booking Rating from real customers
- Proximity
I also wrote a whole blog post on the best family hotels in Portugal with a section on Sintra and Cascais!
1) Penha Longa Resort in Sintra (Marriott Ritz Carlton)
This is a 5-star hotel that can be affordable in the off-season! We stayed here with points for a night and it was stunning. It is located in the most serene mountains only 11 minutes from Sintra and 17 minutes to Cascais. The breakfast buffet was incredible and it had the best hotel playground we have ever experienced. Indoor and outdoor pools.
2) Chalet Saudade - In the Historic Center!

FAQ for Exploring Sintra

My son at Praia do Ursa!
1) Is the Town of Sintra Worth Visiting?
Absolutely, Sintra is a must-visit for its stunning palaces, gardens, and rich history. I don’t think I have ever been to any place more magical than Sintra! The light, microclimate, natural beauty, history and food is unlike any other place.
2) Can you just walk around Sintra?
Yes, you can easily walk around Sintra and discover its beautiful streets and sights of the historic town. Only the National Palace of Sintra is in the main city and the rest of the palaces (Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, Monserrate) are a 45 minute drive (or 1.5 hour walk) up the mountain.
3) How much time do you need in Sintra?
I’d recommend spending at least a full day to truly appreciate all that Sintra has to offer. 2-3 days if you want to see more than 1 or 2 castles.
4) Can you do Sintra in Half a Day?
You can see some highlights in half a day, but you'll miss out on a lot of what makes Sintra special, especially if you are coming from Lisbon. If you only have half a day, I would visit Cascais instead.
5) Best Order to Visit Attractions?
Start with Pena Palace early in the morning, then head to the Moorish Castle, followed by lunch in town, and finish with Quinta da Regaleira. I write my tick tock here.
6) Must-See Places?
If you have a full day and kids who can walk a lot, I would say Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira, and Cabo da Roca for sunset.
7) Do you need a travel guide for Sintra?
A travel guide can enhance your visit with fascinating insights, but you can also enjoy exploring on your own.
